Wireless smart home power meter

posted by Singinius on 26 December 2007 11:38

Problem context :

You have no way to easily monitor your power usage at home and therefore no way to easily conserve power.

You have no way to ensure you are paid fair market value for power you generate yourself. (i.e. Solar PV or wind power)

You have no way to be paid for access to power storage you may have at your home (i.e. plug in hybrid)

You have no choice of who you purchase your power from and where that power comes from.

Proposed Solution :

The solution is a wireless smart power meter that is not owned by the utility company but owned by you. This power meter provides the critical missing link that can give you acess to the information about your power usage or generation. Once this link is in place then there is an opportunity to break the monopoly held by the power companies.

The power companies have held their monopoly for so long because they have invested the capital required to build the large power generation facilities and to run power lines to your door. But some of you have, or will, invested your own capital for a solar PV system but you still have no choice about where the power you generate is sold. How can the power companies decide what YOU are paid for power that you generate? Why are you not given the opportunity to chose who will pay you the best price for your power.

Even if you do not have any power generation capability you could still benefit from an open power market that increases competeition and gives consumers more choice.

The only way to break the monopoly is to do it from the ground up. And we do that first by gaining access to the information about what power your use or generate. This knowledge will put the power of choice, and the choice of power in your hands.
