Problem context :
Meter stick is not very user friendly device to measure length of smooth surface. You must have enough width to put meter stick over surface. Also need concentration to find exact number on meter stick. It cannot help you to calculate other measurement (area, contour) and marking surface.
Proposed Solution :
Pen type meter (a digital device formed in pen type) calculates length (also contour, area, angle) with optical interface like optical mouse and shows selected value (length, angle, area) in oled screen. It can work all light reflected surfaces. A small microcontroller calculates distance and angle changes by comparing images of surface by taken small cmos sensor mounted front piece of pen.

I think it will work. But I also think you need to identify (and convince the community of) a target market. Is this for contractors, designers. Is this a common gripe for any major group of people?
Identify them, and survey a few. See what features they want and if you can have them post the ideas here.
