open tablet device

Problem context :
despite all this talk of convergence, the 5, 6, 7 inch tablet form factor space is crowded. It has:
- media players
- large mobile phones
- ultra mobile XP tablets
- UMPC
- web tablets
- book readers
I'm sure people can think of other devices. Some of these use the linux kernel, yet it is difficult to get into these 'closed' embedded systems. If you can get in, it is because someone has hacked it.
Proposed Solution :
What is needed is a truly open tablet device.
The spec should be published and any of the OSS mobile builds should run. There's quite a few OS to choose from according to this list:
- Trolltech
- Access
- MontaVista
- A La Mobile
- Celunite
- Purple Labs
How about this for a specification:
- 400MHz ARM processor
- 1280 x 1024 7 inch display
- touch screen
- 1 GB RAM
- Varying amount of Solid State Disk
- WiMax/WiFi/WUSB/Bluetooth
- induction charged batteries
Although a little far away the display could be OLED, which would save power (no backlight).

4:3 aspect screen might not be best

you suggested a 7-inch 1280x1024 screen. i think the screen should be a widescreen. then, it would fit better in you pocket.
1 GB of ram is unnecessary

i doubt those varieties of linux you mention would require that much ram. it would add needless cost.

As a Handheld Multimedia device

The Sony PSP was so close to being great. Look at how much home brew there is for it. And that is WITH Sony's attempts to keep it from being upgradeable. I think an opensource handheld as a movie player, game platform, and mp3 player could profit.
multi-touch

Adding multitouch would help. The gestures used on the iphone, such as spreading your fingers apart to blow something up, would be nice.
