Kid Friendly DVD Player

Problem context :
My niece and nephews have a lot of dvds that are unplayable from abuse.
Proposed Solution :
The best solution I could come up with is to put the dvds in a case similar to Ram Disc or like floppy discs. I see only a couple of changes needed to the RAM Disc cases to make this work: 1) A locking mechanism that wouldn't let the metal cover slide open until it is in the player 2) The ability for a parent to open it up and put in a disc. So they could buy the shell and put in whatever disc they wanted to protect.

Remove the disc tray from a standard drive

This is a great idea. Especially if it was Disney, Sesame Street or Wiggles branded merchandise. Anyway, I figure that if you pull out the sliding tray from a standard dvd drive that you could make a cartridge that would slot into that space. You'd probably want a spring loaded flap on the front to prevent dust etc from getting in. You might get away with the 5 1/4 inch disk concept where there is no sliding tab, but just a rectangular gap. It will still protect the disk from general use and sliding around on surfaces that would otherwise scratch the disks. Great concept.
The mechanisms already exist--why are we waiting?

This is a great idea, as it has already been done in a slightly different form. Older CD-ROM drives required the disc to be placed in a protective caddy before insertion in the drive, so the basic design for this already exists. All it needs is a locking mechanism added to the caddy. The harder part is the DVD-ROM drive itself within the player- again, the mechanism for loading a disc caddy already exists, but resurrecting such a design from the dead and retrofitting it with a DVD laser would be the only issue. This is rather minor. In closing, I think that this is a great idea that could be realized with very little R&D.

If you could sell (possibly in addition to oem disks) a protective case that snaps over existing movie disks and makes them into protected disks that play in your player, people wouldn't have to rebuy movies, and you wouldnt need to contract with every movie maker ever.
