Digital Distance Measure
posted by seanohagan on 4 September 2007 7:10 Go to forum
Problem context :
Measuring tapes can be annoying to use, even when two people are around. Also, only straight-line distances can be measured.
Proposed Solution :
Embed 3-axis accelerometers into a small hand-held device, to measure path distance, or point to point distance. Press a button to record start and end point.
(Are accelerometers accurate enough to be able to calculate these distances?)

There are already a complete range of Laser measuring devices. They are extremely accurate, and used by the pros. I don't see what advantage an accelerometer would have, as a accelerometer only knows its tilt and force relative to itself.

Accelerometers are not sensitive enough

There are ones that are good enough, but the commercially available ones that I'm familiar with are really inconsistent. I'd like to see some research done though.
