Dear CrowdSpirit community members,
TC40
I’m very happy to announce from San Francisco that CrowdSpirit has been officially launched at the Techcrunch40 event. Just to remind you, this event is organized by Michael Arrington, Jason Calacanis and Heather Harde. The format is simple: Forty of the hottest new startups from all around the World announce and demo their products over a two day period at this major event. In total, there were almost to 700 submissions from 26 different countries and as the name suggests, only 40 were retained. This afternoon, I have presented CrowdSpirit in front of major media companies (check here).

Thanks once again for your wonderful support. We can now look forward to the next stage of our venture: the launch of our first product !

With my very best regards,

Lionel, CrowdSpirit Founder

CrowdSpirit had an article published in “Le Monde” newspaper. This article is in French of course –> CrowdSpirit
Moreover, there is also an interesting article regarding the CrowdSourcing in general.

Carl from the great Crowdsourcing directory blog wrote an interesting article on crowdspirit. Carl is well summarizing the expectations around our project because “it will be an important testcase to show if, and to what extent, Crowdsourcing can be used to turn ideas into real products“.

Is last question is “Is Crowdsourcing the next industrial revolution? I think this will depend on how entrepreneurial spirit is integrated with the ideas of the crowds.” And you….what is your opinion ?
Best regards,

I will have the chance to participate as presenter to the Internet Retailer 2007 in London, UK where I will introduce CrowdSpirit. Here is the teaser of my presentation “Web 2.0 has seen a massive amount of content generated online in the form of blogs, videos, wikis and user-generated product reviews. This is just the tip of Web 2.0 and only the start of what can be achieved by the power of the online crowd. Crowdsourcing, literally outsourcing to the crowd, is seen by analysts as the next industrial revolution. By examining current and future projects, this presentation explains how companies are starting to harness this collaborative intelligence for economic gain“.

Last year participants include : “ Adams Childrenswear, Amazon Services, Ann Summers, Apple, Arcadia Group, Austin Reed, BAA, Barclays Bank, BBC, Bhs, Carphone Warehouse, Charles Tyrwhitt, Chickenshop.co.uk, dabs.com, Direct Wines, Disney Store Europe, DSG International, Early Learning Centre, El Corte Ingles, Endsleigh Insurance, Gadgetshop, Google, Harvey Nichols, Hawkin’s Bazaar, Hitachi, HMV, House of Fraser, I Want One of Those, Jessops, John Lewis, kiddicare.com, Lastminute.com, Marks and Spencer, Matalan, Muji, Paperchase, Play.com, Sainsburys, Sears Holdings, Tesco Direct, The National Trust, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Tile Depot, tooled-up.com, Travelocity, UrbanRetro.co.uk, Virgin Retail, Woolworths.” Not too bad ;-)

Zero Newassigment magasin is promoting some extracts from the 50 interviews that they conducted around CrowdSourcing. I’m proud to announce that one of them is extracted from the interview that I had with Andrea LaPorte last Week. Here is an extract of it :
“Thinking of the potential of crowdsoucing, Lionel David founder of Crowdspirit, believes having new means to communicate will spur on more co-develpment and collaboration towards the invention of new consumer electronics: “I think crowdsourcing or more co-development in our case is definitively not a “transitory” phenomenon. The basis of this trend was identified many decades ago by researchers like Eric Von Hippel. The word crowdsourcing could be “transitory,” but the trend itself is on its way. [Wired Contributing Editor] Jeff Howe was clearly visionary by inventing this word and by raising it to the public at the perfect time to market. What is more important is the fact that, thanks to the internet, we finally have the means to communicate to the masses, in order to really engage that new industrial revolution which was predicted a long time ago. It’s now just a question of time before we see the deep impact that it will have in our society. Moreover, we can look at the macro-economical aspect of this revolution. In the last century, several nations tried various economic systems like capitalism and communism. In this century, crowdsourcing could be seen as a new way of thinking for our future society.”

CrowdSpirit is part of the Assignment Zero effort. As indicated on the website, Assignment Zero is

“Inspired by the open-source movement, this is an attempt to bring journalists together with people in the public who can help cover a story. It’s a collaboration among NewAssignment.Net, Wired, and those who choose to participate.”

So keep an eye on this website to get some news about CrowdSpirit

Josh Catone has published a very well detailed article on CrowdSourcing on the readwriteweb website. CrowdSpirit is mentioned as “a very ambitious project” with CambrianHouse under the creation Category.

This is brillant analysis is raising “One potential flaw in the CrowdSpirit model” about the support..so if you do not have the time to read my comment, here is:

Hello Josh,

thanks a lot for that very interesting article. Let me come back on your comment on CrowdSpirit regarding the support of the products. Hopefully as a former Support employee of HP consumer product, I can tell you how support is important for a brand ;-). So no worry, the real technical 2nd level support will be handled by qualified technician and not by the Crowd. Thanks again for this article.

Crowded Out of a Brand Name?

Here is an article which points out the ways companies are harnessing the power of crowds and “crowd clout” in their brand names, company names, and website naming. That’s right … more and more companies are using Crowd in their name and I cannot deny that CrowdSpirit is a very good example of this trend ;-)

Thanks a lot Jon for having performed this interesting analysis.
