Chris loves looking over patent applications. Chris he’s not the kind of geek that constantly sifts through every filing at the FCC, but every now and then someone catches a new filing that it worth looking at. The latest is an application from Apple which describes a possible new multitouch trackpad that utilizes chords.

When Chris reads the word “chords” he immediately thought of playing the guitar, which when he looked at the rest of the application, made complete sense. Essentially, you could program the trackpad to respond to various gestures with a combination of your four fingers (no thumb). You could then set each gesture to activate a different command.

I’m not a Mac user, but this does sound like something that would be pretty cool to use. Chris doubt it would be long before someone developed some type of software which would allow you to make music with the chords. Unfortunately we have no idea when or if Apple will be implementing this technology into their MacBooks.

Ooh, it’s a world’s first / best / most! I love those. Does anyone else mentally place bets on how long it’ll be before someone else claims to have topped it? Hopefully not too soon in this case, as I think this does look and sound pretty impressive.

The Area-51 m15x has the option of packing the new badass Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 processor and the world’s fastest notebook graphics from NVIDIA (courtesy of the GeForce 8800M GTX) to live up to its claimed title. This combination should see lightning-fast processing coupled with better thermal management so that a great balance of performance and battery life is achieved.

Other features include Alienware’s BinaryGFX technology, which allows heavy-duty users to switch between the integrated and high-performance graphics cards and Smart Bay technology for customisation including hot-swap optical drive, second hard drive and backup battery.

Underpinning this all is up to 4GB of RAM and a choice of 200GB or 300GB hard drive or 64GB solid state drive. There are also options of up to 7.1 digital high definition audio, beyond 1080p high definition resolution support and a Dual Layer 2x Blu-Ray/DVD±R/W/CD-RW Burner optical drive.

All that power doesn’t come cheap. The basic configuration with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor starts at £1,543.

Of all the odd combo devices on the road today, this one actually seems to make some sense. Portugal-based NDrive has developed what it calls “the world’s first GPS navigation system with a breathalyzer,” according to NaviGadget.

There are other car breathalyzers that have been developed, of course, including some that prevent the engine from starting if the driver is past the legal limit. But the built-in GPS system might provide additional incentive for motorists to buy one of these portable devices, which appear to be destined for the European market for 200 euros, or about $297. As for the practicality, it obviously doesn’t hurt to have a little help with directions, especially if you’ve had a few beers and have to hoof it.

Gesture-controlled Robot

There is a new control system that helps a robot get around - using simple hand and body gestures. Engineer Tsuyoshi Horo at Tokyo University has developed this system which utilizes a circular array of cameras to detect human movements in the room, conveying them to the robot as an equivalent directional command. The system is smart enough to produce a real-time 3D volumetric model of folks and objects within the circle of cameras, so you get precise tracking movements. I wonder what would the robot do if you flip the cameras.

18-year-old boy racer Danny Hyde filmed himself getting his Astra up to 130mph - quite a feat in itself - then stuck the resulting video on YouTube. But he was grassed up by an anonymous vigilante, who sent a link to cops.

The video showed Hyde filming his speedo with his phone, then the road, then his speedo again, obviously driving at warp factor three with only one hand on the wheel, as he hammered along the A14 near Ipswich.

The original video’s been taken off YouTube, sadly, but a saved version exists here at the Evening Star’s site if you want to see just how stupid the 18-year-olds of today actually are.

Danny admitted the crime, as you sort of have to when you’ve just videoed yourself doing it, and was today given a four month suspended sentence.

So there’s a bit of advice. If you’re going to film yourself doing something bad, don’t put it up on YouTube. The police can check stuff like this and find out who you are, even if you use a made up name.

Electronic Paper Scale

Duck Image Studio has come up with an electronic paper scale concept that brings together an e-paper display and an ultra thin flexible pressure sensing sheet. Guess you can’t use the bathroom scale as a projectile in any marital dispute any more, as this will probably flop onto the ground long before it reaches the intended target. This electronic paper scale is not only waterproof, it is extremely easy to clean and can be rolled up for easy storage. How many of you would like to see something like this hit the market?

POW! Apple’s MacBook Air has a “perfect, sophisticated external appearance, but its insides are full of waste.”

BLAM! Its structure is “hard to comprehend”.

OOF! “I can’t find anything that is technically superior. We can make the same computer at a lower cost.”

These are the words of a bunch of Japanese engineers surveyed by Nikkei Publications, who’ve reached the utterly shocking conclusion that, gasp, the MacBook Air is more expensive than it needs to be. You don’t say.

Next week, the engineers present their research into whether mammals in the Ursidae family exrete in forested areas.
